Yes, most do. Apartment buildings in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the rest of the Twin Cities metro with 5 or more units, CenterPoint Energy or Xcel Energy as the gas provider, and Xcel Energy service can receive a free on-site energy assessment, free installation of lighting, water and weather-stripping measures, and help with rebates that carry a bonus.
The offer comes from the Multi-Family Building Efficiency program that Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy run together. It is at no cost to the owner, the management company or residents.
Which buildings qualify
The program is built for classic apartment buildings:
- 5 or more units
- A common entrance and common hallways, with each unit entered from the hallway
- A kitchen in every unit
- CenterPoint Energy or Xcel Energy as the natural gas provider
Townhome communities are not included. Market-rate and income-qualified buildings both take part.
What is free
- An on-site assessment that reviews the building’s energy history, lighting and mechanical equipment, with an efficiency report
- LED bulbs and tube lighting
- Water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators
- Smart power strips
- Weather stripping and door sweeps on exterior doors
- Programmable thermostats in common areas
Exactly which items apply depends on the building’s gas provider.
The rebate bonus
For larger projects, such as heating, ventilation or lighting upgrades the building pays for, the program helps with the rebate application and adds a bonus on top of the standard rebate: 30% for market-rate buildings and 200% for income-qualified buildings. That bonus is where the larger savings sit for most owners.
How to apply
The application needs a signature from the owner or a property manager working for the owner, plus the most recent gas and electric bills for each building. A consultant can prepare and submit it on the owner’s behalf.
Where ONPEAK fits
The program is open to any owner who applies. Owners with several buildings work with us so that one partner handles every property, checks each assessment against the program’s full list, positions larger projects for the bonus, and reports which savings reach the owner and which reach residents. Which energy savings reach the owner explains that split.
