Do Minneapolis apartment buildings qualify for free energy upgrades?

Most Minneapolis and St. Paul apartment buildings can get a free assessment, free installs and a rebate bonus through utility programs. What owners can expect.

Jorge Robaina ·

Yes, most do. Apartment buildings in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the rest of the Twin Cities metro with a common entrance and hallways and a kitchen in every unit can receive a free on-site energy assessment, free installation of lighting, water-saving and weather-stripping measures, and a bonus on rebates for larger projects.

This applies to buildings served by participating utilities, which covers most of the metro. Market-rate and income-qualified buildings both take part.

What owners can expect

  • A free on-site assessment and efficiency report
  • Free LED lighting, water-saving showerheads and aerators, smart power strips, door weather stripping and common-area thermostats
  • A 30% bonus on rebates for larger projects at market-rate buildings
  • A 200% bonus, plus appliance replacements and in some buildings heat pumps, at income-qualified buildings

Where the real value sits

The free installs are welcome, but the larger savings sit in the projects that earn the rebate bonus: heating, ventilation, lighting and controls work the building would do anyway. Owners who treat the program as a box of light bulbs miss most of it. Owners with several buildings also find that each one qualifies for something different.

Where ONPEAK fits

We qualify every property in your portfolio, make sure each assessment captures everything eligible, position larger projects for the bonus, and report which savings reach you and which reach residents. Which energy savings reach the owner explains that split. You pay our fee only once the upgrades are approved.

How to find out

FAQ

Common questions

Do townhome communities qualify?

No. Funding in the Twin Cities is built for apartment buildings with a common entrance and hallways. Townhome communities are not included.

Do income-qualified buildings receive more?

Yes. They receive a larger rebate bonus and additional measures, such as appliance replacements and, in some buildings, heat pumps.

Does the owner pay anything?

Not for the assessment or the measures installed at no cost. Larger projects earn rebates plus a bonus, which reduce the cost rather than remove it. ONPEAK's fee is due only once the upgrades are approved.
